SUMMARY:Christian Education Book Study - Life in a Jar
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTIAN ED BOOK STUDY\, “LIFE IN A JAR” BY JACK MAYER\nNow that fall has arrived\, the Parish Ed Committee is offering a book study about students from rural Kansas\nwho discovered a Polish Catholic woman who saved Jewish children during the Holocaust Description of the\nbook is as follows: \nIn the fall of 1999\, a rural Kansas teacher encouraged three students to\nwork on a year-long National History Day project which would\, among\nother things\, extend the boundaries of the classroom\, contribute to\nhistory learning\, teach respect and tolerance\, and meet their classroom\nmotto\, “He who changes one person\, changes the world entire.” Two\nninth graders\, Megan Stewart and Elizabeth Cambers\, and an eleventh\ngrader\, Sabrina Coons\, accepted the challenge and decided to enter their\nproject in the National History Day program. Their teacher\, Mr. Norm\nConard\, showed them a short clipping from a March 1994 issue of News\nand World Report\, which said\, “Irena Sendler saved many children and\nadults from the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942.” Her network saved children from the Ghetto plus\nprovided hiding locations for over 2\,000 children. Norm told the girls the article might be a\ntypographical error since he had not heard of this woman or story. The students began their\nresearch and looked for primary and secondary sources throughout the year. The first discussion will take place on Tuesday\, October 28th at 6pm\nand cover Parts I and II of the book. The second discussion will take place on Thursday\, November 20th at 6pm\nand cover Part III of the book. A sign-up sheet will be available.
