November 2003
November 30th Begins the Season of Advent! The season of Advent begins Sunday November 30th. The color of the paraments in church will be blue, symbolizing hope. These four weeks leading up to Christmas call our attention to the second coming of Christ, at the end of time; the coming of Christ as he began his public ministry, announced by John the Baptist; and the coming of Christ as an infant, God incarnate.
The candles of the Advent wreath will grow with increasing brightness over the four weeks, signaling the approaching celebration of Jesus' birth. During Advent, the Psalm will be sung instead of being read responsively, and there will be special readings during the distribution of communion. Worship with anticipation! The Christ Child, the very Son of God is coming! Amen and amen.
Help Needed: The audio department at Holy Cross is seeking volunteers. We have upgraded our sound system and now record the entire second service on compact disc. We continue to record the second service sermon on audiocassette. We need to train some folks on how the equipment functions. If you attend the late service and can help out, please see Henry Perkins.
Would you like to be a Trustee?: We are in desperate need of people, male or female, to serve on the Trustee Committee. The Trustee Committee oversees the maintenance of our church bulletins and grounds. For more information, speak with Ron & Lucille Donovan or Henry Perkins.
SERRV Fair: Pickup day for the items ordered from the catalog is Saturday, November 22nd. The table will be set up in the Narthex. Proceeds from the fair to benefit York Shelters and ELCA World Hunger, with a possible matching grant from Thrivent.
Small Group Survey: As we begin to offer some additional small group opportunities, we would like to know what your interests might be. Please complete the yellow Small Group Survey found in the back of the church, and place it in the envelope on the board in the narthex.
Seniors Lunch & Learn: November 11 we will feature Ingrid Roeder, a new face around Holy Cross. Ingrid is a specialist in moving and stretching, and will show us how to have fun while staying limber, even for seniors with common health concerns. Lunch and dessert will be provided, and a voluntary donation of $5.00 is suggested. After lunch, there will be board games available. Sign up in the narthex.
Habitat for Humanity Work Day: We will have a work day at the new habitat house on Saturday, November 8. Please see the Social Concerns page for more information.
Potluck Movie Night: Everyone is invited on Saturday, Nov. 8th from 5:00 to 7:30 for a pot luck dinner and a movie in Luther Hall. Bring a family friendly dish to share as our C.O.O.L School shares what they have leared on their just completed unit on Moses. Come join them in reviewing this wonderful and exciting Bible story with the viewing of the movie "Prince of Egypt". Please sign up in the Narthex, but do join us even if you aren't able to sign up ahead of time.
Bible Class: Pastor Horner will be teaching a five session Bible Study class for adults on the book of Philippians starting Sunday, November 2nd in Luther Hall.
Thanksgiving Offering: The special Thanksgiving offering has been designated by the church council to be used in support of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Please use the special envelope included in your envelope box for this purpose.
Consecration Sunday: Consecration Sunday is scheduled for November 23rd. On the three Sundays prior to that date, members of Holy Cross will give temple talks having to do with stewardship - using our time , ability, and money in support of the ministry carried out through our church. On November 23rd itself, members will be asked to fill out a commitement card for financial giving and place it in the offering plate. You are also invited to attend a breakfast being cooked and served by the Church Council on the 23rd. There will be two settings for the meal - one at 9:15 am (between the services), and another at 11:45 am (following the second service). You will soon have an opportunity to reserve a space at one of these two times, and it would be a great help for those preparing the meal to know how many people to plan for. The meal is for people of all ages (Sunday School classes will not be held). Consecration Sunday provides a chance for members of the church to be together in a spirit of thanksgiving for all the blessings we enjoy from God, and to rededicate ourselves to the work of the church in the coming year.
Holiday Around The World: On Saturday, December 6th at 4:30 pm there will be a potluck supper. Please bring your favorite dish from around the world for the holidays. Think of the family dishes you have had at the holidays. Come and share them with the family and friends of Holy Cross. After dinner, simple crafts can be made down in the Sunday school room. Come and relax at the supper before the Christmas rush. Please sign up in the narthex so we can have a count for the crafts and supper. Sponsored by the Church Life Committee.
