August 2004
Mid Year Report from Finance Committee:
The Treasurer's report for the first 6 months of 2004 shows that while regular offerings are about the same as last year, they are about 10% below budget. Through June 30th $100,455 has been received compared to $112,500 needed as budgeted. As you consider your giving the rest of this year, consider the many ministries of your church family that your offerings are supporting. If you pledged for 2004, you have or will soon receive your report of giving for the first 6 months. The Treasurer's report for the first 6 months is posted on the bulletin board in Luther Hall.
MID-SUMMER INTERGENERATIONAL EVENINGS
Please join us this summer for a series of Wednesday evening activities. We will meet at 5:30 for a light supper and then have a fun and interesting program, sometimes multigenerational, sometimes with children and youth separate
from the adults. We will close with devotions and prayer. Donation for the meal will be $5 per person, $10 per family. Come as often as you can.
Please note that the schedule has changed from last months newsletter.
The schedule is as follows:
JULY 28TH - A STORY OF SONG and HYMN SING
Roger Knight, a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Westbrook, will lead this evening's adult program. Roger has an inspiring story to tell about how he came to be a leader of singing after many years of not uttering a musical note. His story is inspirational and entertaining and will include the singing of many favorite hymns. Roger is a friend of the Hakansons and has done this program at local churches, nursing homes, and at Calumet. The children's program will include a video and some of their own favorite songs.
AUGUST 4TH - THE BEST INDOOR CAMPFIRE EVER
By popular demand, we are bringing back the worship team and some former Calumet staff and helpers as we sit around the campfire in Luther Hall. We will sing all your favorite camp/folk songs and join in famous Calumet skits. Bring a beach chair or sleeping bag. As always, there will be smores and bug juice to go with your happy faces. This is an intergenerational event.
AUGUST11TH - TABLE AND OTHER GAMES
Pastor Horner will lead everyone from 3-93 in a fun evening of Logos type games, as well as board games. We will sometimes work in teams, sometimes in friendly competition, but always everyone a winner. This is an intergenerational event suited for all ages and abilities.
AUGUST 18TH - ICE CREAM SOCIAL AND SCAVENGER HUNT
Build-your-own giant sundae followed by a giant scavenger hunt for all ages. Whether you burn off those calories finding the clues or digest those calories while holding the clues, much fun and laughter is guaranteed for all. This is an intergenerational event for all ages and abilities.
AUGUST 25TH - TALENT NIGHT
Our own Wes Fraser will MC an evening of talent and entertainment. While the adults are sharing their amazing and creative gifts, the children will be planning their own performance, which they will offer to the adults at the end of the evening. Talk to Wes or Karen if you would like to participate in the talent show.
YOUTH GROUP
On August 1st at 6:00, we will meet at church for an evening of mini golf and ice cream. Cost is $5. Signup in the narthex. As always, you are welcome to bring a friend. We look forward to welcoming the 2004 confirmation class to our Youth Group!
On Sunday, August 29th, we will meet at 11:00 for a trip to Water Country in Portsmouth. $20 will cover admission and a meal deal. Bring a friend. Bring your towel and bathing suit. Come and have a blast splash! Financial assistance is available talk with Pastor.
PLAY GROUP/MOTHER'S SUPPORT GROUP
An informational meeting to explore the feasibility of a Christian Play Group/Mother's Support Group will be held in Luther Hall on Monday, August 9th at 7:00. Everyone is welcome to attend, to share ideas, to share information on current programs in the community, to begin to strategize the development of such a program if there is the need and resources to make it happen. Your attendance and input is most welcome. It need not be a commitment to anything further. Talk with Elaine Ballute or Karen for further information. Also, let them know if you cannot attend but are interested in ongoing participation.
Annual Congregational Picnic
An annual congregational picnic is being planned after church on August 1st at Vi Stephen's house on Kennebunk Pond. Bring bathing suits and something to eat. Directions are on the board in the Narthex.
YOUNG AT HEART

After a leisurely lunch, one can spend the afternoon shopping, see an IMAX movie, take a trolley or duck boat tour of the city, enjoy a museum, sit in the park and people-watch, or do whatever you would like to do. God given talents and gifts to our musical life
As I am sure that those of you who attend Holy Cross know, all of the musicians have done yeomens service to the Church by filling in admirably since Michael Golzmane left rather suddenly. They have practiced, prepared, communicated with the Worship Committee to make both services meaningful to the congregation. They have filled-in for each other when previous commitments left us without an organist at the second service or a pianist at the first.
Last year's Council agreed to pay all of our substitute musicians. The worship team wanted to be paid as a group. (Once Warren arrives all of our musicians will return to volunteer, non-paid status.) The Worship Team has decided to give that money back to Holy Cross by using that money to buy a digital piano, which they will donate, to the Church. A digital piano offers several advantages over the current conventional instrument. To begin with, it would stay in tune. Since we keep the church at 55 degrees for most of the week, and then raise the temperature to 69 or 70, it is almost impossible to maintain consistent tunings. Secondly, a digital has a record function, which would allow for easy fill-in should Warren, our new music director, be absent. A digital piano could serve as a short-term fill in for the organ, should it give up the ghost unexpectedly.
This musical configuration, a new digital piano, with a Bose speaker system could increase the variety of participants, both instrumental and vocal, at our services, Finally, should we try to add a more contemporary service at some point, the proposed arrangements would accommodate a wide variety of options.
With this in mind, the Council has decided to sell the current piano. If anyone in the congregation has an interest, please contact Mike Scott. The money from selling the piano will defray the cost of the speaker system.
To summarize: we will be keeping the smaller electric keyboard for use by youth groups, Logos, etc. The new piano will be donated by the Worship team and the necessary speaker system will be purchased by the money from the sale of the old piano, plus a small donation has been pledged to offset any difference.
All in all, Holy Cross continues to be blest with many individuals who are musically quite gifted. Their willingness to share their time and talents with all of us adds immeasurably to our worship experience. Just this year since Lent, Ruth Bentley, Vicki Cherry, Catherine Morrisette, Chris Indorf, Art Morrisette, Ann Scott, Sue and Ken Hampton, Erica Boulay, Cindy Kalkhoff, Drew Horner, Chris and David Cherry, and Jenny and Becky Anderson have shared their talents with us. This list doesnt include the members of the Choir, the soloists, and the Cantors who have led us as we make a joyful noise to the Lord.
Please don't think that replacement plans the organ have been forgotten. Vicki Cherry has graciously donated her earnings as substitute Choir Director to go to the organ fund. The worship committee expects that when Warren arrives, the Church will begin to review our options for the organ. More to follow on this topic.
For now, join the Worship Committee in thanking God for all of talent he has given our musical life at Holy Cross and for the spirit of giving that is an example to all of us.
