Music Director:  Warren King warren@kennebunklutheran.org

"Maestro" Warren KIng has been playing piano and organ in church settings across the country since his teens, and directing choirs as well.  He earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Lowell State University, Massachusetts.  Among his many achievements was organizing and directing the first ecumenical choir, over 100 voices, in Methuen, MA, where he played for the First Church Congregational for 10 years.  For the last five years, he has taken great pleasure in coordinating and performing in the summer Sunday concert series at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, where he enjoys providing a performance venue for many of the talented members of Holy Cross.  The other musicians he has met through this series have often been brought to Holy Cross to provide special music, a happy bonus.  He feels blessed to have had the opportunity to accompany the combined choirs of Holy Cross and Ogunquit Baptist Church in the outstanding concert that was recorded on the Epiphany CD, below.  He has always considered his music to be a gift from God that he is obligated to share, and that joy comes through in every piece he plays, whatever the setting.

the Lutheran Philosophy of Music:
"Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.  It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits... "  Dr. Martin Luther

Music is an integral part of Lutheran worship, as it lifts our hearts to God.

Music Notes:

We welcome Owen White, new drummer for the Saturday Praise band; thanks, Owen, for your great contribution to our music!!

The return concert of the Leipzig musicians was a big success -- two standing ovations and an encore, as well as $280 raised for music ministries.  They'll be back in 2012 -- be sure to catch them then!  The preceding gourmet dinner was also a success, thoroughly enjoyed by all, and raised $180 for the Special appeal.  It was altogether a great evening!

Opportunities to participate in the musical life of the church:

Summer Soloists:  9:45 Sunday - Summer Traditional Service In the summer time, when the Choir is off-duty, beginning June 6 this year, we enjoy having gifted members and friends of the congregation provide anthems during the service, either vocal or instrumental.  Individuals are invited to propose music they'd like to offer, or the Music Director will make suggestions and rehearse with the musician.   Naturally, this earns you an invitation to the choir parties.

Choir: 10:45 Sunday (except summer) - Traditional Service    The choir rehearses Thursday evenings from 7:00 to about 8:00 p.m. from September through June, and supplies offertory anthems for the traditional worship service as well as festival celebrations.  Choir members also cantor the liturgy.  We have a great time raising a joyful noise to the Lord, and we also have great parties at the King homestead.

Worship Team: 8:15 Sunday - Modern Lutheran Liturgy     The Worship Team rehearses Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m., immediately after the early worship service.  Worship Team members serve as song leaders and cantors, and are included in the choir parties.

Praise Band: 5:00 Saturday - Informal Worship The Praise Band usually rehearses Thursdays in Fall and Winter from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. and includes instrumentalists and vocalists to lead the songs at our informal Saturday afternoon service.  Opportunity: Vocalists are needed to enhance the leadership of our Praise Band.  The band will help  get you oriented and support you if you're shy. If you can help, even occasionally, please email Maestro Warren at warren@kennebunklutheran.org And, you'll get to come to the choir parties.

Concerts and Special Events: As well as worship and liturgical music, Holy Cross frequently presents concerts and other musical events for the community to enjoy, and to help fund the music program.  It was a thrill when we were able to replace the ancient Rogers electronic organ with a fine new Ahlborn-Galanti instrument, "the electronic organ for pipe organ people."  Using music samples from the greatest pipe organs in the world and a unique windchest speaker system, the Ahlborn-Galanti sounds just like an authentic pipe organ, so much so that it lured a professional European concert organist to play several concerts for us.

Epiphany Concert CD is a great success!

The CD from the January 2009 Epiphany concert is now available for purchase -- just $10 for the best Christmas gift you can give yourself or those you love.  Our own Rich McBrine has done an outstanding job of recording and producing this exquisite recording.  Purchase it at church, or mail a check for $10.00 made out to Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Music Program in the memo line to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2 Lord St, Kennebunk, ME  04043.  If you want the CD mailed to you, please add $2.00 for shipping up to  three CD's per package.
